Excellence in the water: YMCA Swim Teachers lead by example

Trusting the authenticity of your child’s swimming lessons is so much easier when the instructor is a state swimming champion!

Swimming isn’t just something we teach in YMCAs across South Australia; swimming is we live and breathe. Our swimming teacher Bec from Whyalla Recreation Centre has made that evident by rewriting the record books at the South Australian Masters Games, where she claimed her fourth state record in breaststroke. Across her career, she has now broken a total of six records, a testament to her dedication and drive. But her true championing is in the delivery of her swimming lessons, “being such a kind and caring support for our little swimmers!” as praised by local parents.

Bec’s achievements on the competitive swimming stages are impressive, but her passion for swimming is so infectious that it’s evident in every lesson she teaches. Parents and families can see firsthand that their child is learning from someone who lives and breathes swimming. Bec’s story is proof that, with the right support and a love for the water, amazing things can happen.

Behind every great swimmer is a strong support network, and for Bec, that’s her coach and mentor, Shaune. “Shaune’s guidance and support helped me achieve my goal,” she shared. “I’m getting fitter doing what I love, and I couldn’t have done it without that encouragement.” Shaune’s praise of Bec’s passion is evident too, stating how proud he is of her, “not just your swimming achievements, but as a person who helps out our up and coming swimmers and inspires them.

YMCA SA encourages families to keep swimming lessons going year-round, and having passionate instructors like Bec makes it easier, and more inspiring, to keep them growing in water safety. Who knows, maybe the next state record-breaker could be in one of our swimming lesson classes today!
