Foodbank drive a community winner
Whyalla Recreation Centre (WRC) dug deep to donate to a great local cause throughout December, resulting in many disadvantaged community members enjoying a better Christmas.
A drive to assist Foodbank Whyalla was run between 1 and 12 December with much-needed goods collected from WRC members and the general community and forwarded to the charity.
“We wanted to make a difference to those in need across Christmas and the holiday season,” said WRC Manager Jodi Selin. “We were absolutely blown away by the support of our community. Donations were placed under our Christmas tree and it very quickly overflowed.”
The push to assist was driven by the release of statistics that showed that 74,800 South Australian children has gone hungry in the last 12 months. People were encouraged to access a list of the 12 most needed items online and leave their donations at the Centre. Those who donated were entered into a Centre Christmas raffle as a thank you.
“Coordination of community assistance like this is important and creates a real sense of community among people at a special time of year. Continuing to help those in need is a key aim of the YMCA and all of us at Whyalla Recreation Centre,” said Ms Selin.
